Wakesurfing behind an I/O?

Yea or Nay?

I have not tried it yet, but have a strap-on board and rope (ready to be cut to length), but worried about the outdrive...Will I have to be too close to be safe?

All I've ever heard is Absolutely NO! The risk of cutting off a limb is too dangerous.

we do it all the time... although we have a massive swim platform over the drive.

I'm sure "the picture" will be posted soon, don't do it, you'll see why. Way to dangerous, you will be too close to the outdrive.

OK...please do not post "the picture". I can only imagine what it is, and have a fairly weak stomach.

What is a safe distance from the prop, approximately? I may be able to mess with the trim and get some sort of surfable wave further back. I don't necessarily have to be in the curl to have a good time.

Hell, the waves in Texas, where I do 90% of my surfing, have no curl!

I doubt with your boat you could get a wave big enough to ride at a "safe" distance. Maybe with some kind of longboard, and a ton of ballast, but I don't know if it's worth a try...

One little slip, and....

Thanks.......I had to keep reading...you can't un-see things! Can't imagine why anyone would put themselves that close to the prop on purpose......I have a close friend who lost a brother in an accident involving an inboard. Cut him in half. The driver (his friend) ran him over while retrieving him after skiing....no alcohol involved...just a terrible accident. Surfing behind and I/O...no way.

I have wanted to try wake surfing, but no way will I do it behind my boat. We also have a massive swim plat form. Find someone that has the proper kind of boat for it and let them take you out.

Thank you very much for the graphic picture.

I shall not sleep for days without waking up with a scream and night sweats...

I wouldn't even try it with a platform. I/O = no go.

Not that it helps but I've seen that picture before in First Responder training. It is actually a crush injury but I have seen one from a prop. I won't post pictures or go into details but it's not good.

I didn't think it looked like a prop injury. Still gross!

I have seen prop injuries. Not good.

Only thing I have seen that are worse are jet-ski collision injuries. Not sure why, but they tend to be nasty. I guess all that exploding fiberglass???

Meh, dumb idea to be where you could fall into a prop - not sure how you would get a big enough wake with an I/O to wakesurf anyways As for the picture, you should see the one of the guy who fed himself into a big lathe.

.

Seriously, please, no!

I used to work on those things. Boring mills, lathes up to 100", and they can really mess you up if you get hung up in them.

I prefer NOT to see pictures of anymore damaged body parts.

Re: Wakesurfing behind an I/O?

Wakesurfing is really fun and not a lot of work, if the wave gives enough push.
BUT, please do NOT do it behind an boat where the prop is, in any way, visible behind the boat. It might never happen, but it its not worth the risk of body parts being blended. The injured party is lucky and gets to go in to shock. Everyone else gets to deal with it.

Good point. The passengers and the people in the other boats in the area are the ones who have to live with the memories.

I still recall being about 4 yrs old and watching my parents put a tourniquet on a jet-skier that collided with another, and most likely lost that leg.

My parents have seen a skier jerking around and put his head into the railing of someone else's boat. He didn't live to deal with the trauma, my parents still freak out when thinking about it.

Yes, the injured person it NOT the only one suffering when someone does something stupid on the water.

Re: Wakesurfing behind an I/O?

I've read lots of threads on this topic, but haven't heard anyone suggest the following:

What about putting a prop guard on a sterndrive? I've looked at prop guards on the internet - there's a style that is a full wraparound cage 360 degrees around the prop, plus a full covering at the back). On the off chance that you did fall forward, towards the drive, I would think that would protect you from serious injury.
Prop guards aren't efficient, but so what if you're only going 10 MPH.

I'm not looking to start a giant heated debate...just wondering if there's an option for those of us with I/Os.

Looking forward to your thoughts,
Chris
