Walk through window gap Fix

In the process of restoring my Crownline 196 I thought about how much flex the boat had in the condition I bought it. It had floors replaced but the wood was just pushed under the edges of the cut out fiberglass from the original floor and carpeted over. So the entire floor was not tabbed to the hull. I drove to the lake the first outing and the center window actually slipped past the edge. I put a ratchet strap around the boat in front of the windshield and can easily close the gap in the window frame. Can/should I use that strap and tab my new floor to hold the shape or not? Will it work? Or is it just windshield adjustment only?

The adjustment is simple. The bow hallway. Lower it is the smaller the gap. The higher it is the bigger it gets. So when whoever jammed the new floor in with out removing the old. They raised that part. The cap flexed and the gap widened.

With the floor at the original level there should be a shim under the hallway. To adjust the window gap.

I know I know that isn't what they teach you when installing a windsheild. But it is already installed. Now the trick is returning the cap to the original dimensions. And this is how to do it. Mine took a bunch but it is perfect now.

fix the floors

the floor (deck) should be firmly screwed, glued and tabbed to the hull. its part of the structure of the boat

however you may find that the prior owner did a carp job of that and most likely didnt replace the stringers and bulkheads. so you should plan on a full hull restoration since the floor is the last thing to rot

you will need to properly support the hull while you fix the stringers, bulkhead and floor issue.

BTW, how is your transom? usually that has rotted long prior to the floor

Thanks for the response. Iam doing full reconstruction. All stringer, bulkheads and transom are in. Down to peanut butter on the new floor gaps then 1708 tabbing as sea ray did his. The hack that replaced the old floor just layed the new wood on top of the foam and jammed the ends under the lip he left from the original floor. I cut the center out of the walk through to get access under it. Crownline carpeted that piece before putting on cap. Then it is a little step up and carpet on top of carpet with no way to dry out. I’m following another restore theme and replacing the lower half with plywood. If I set the current gap even top to bottom it is only touching about 3/8 inch on the frame. Do you know how the windshield is attached? Can it me moved enough to close the gap?
