Walleye boat battery location

Hey all,

I'm in the process of installing an onboard charger as well as some other electrical components into my 2007 Legend 16' Xcalibur, and it has me considering moving my battery. It's more of a conversion fishing boat than a walleye boat but thats the best term to describe its layout.

Currently my Auxilary battery is located in a compartment in the bow of the boat. I'm considering relocating it to under the passenger console. I have two reasons to do so

1) I fish by myself 90% of the time, the rest of the time my wife is with me and she weighs 120lbs, so its no concern. I'm thinking the weight distributed beside me will help balance the boat out a bit.

2) secondly, the boat has tons of small storage locations, but only one large compartment...which a large chunk of that is consummed by the battery. It would be very convinient to have that compartment purely for storage.

I'm just looking for input to see if anyone has located a battery there, did it help or hinder distribution, did it make the boat porpuss without that 75lb up front. Any experience is welcome. I've attached a pic of the boat to give an idea, the battery is currently located under the seat in the bow.

Re: Walleye boat battery location

Hi ...welcome to iboats

Weight distribution in a boat is very owner oriented...

What that means is.....owners are very different in how much they weigh....where they stow their equipment...and gear.

So battery location can be moved around to suit the individual owners needs.

I would not install the battery ....but just move it into the area you want......then just take the boat out for a cruise....see if the weight difference is going to be a problem....if you have no issues.....mount it permanently.

I put my second battery in the same place, under the PS console, for the same reasons and it works well for me. As Oops said, don't do anything permanent until you test it.

I think I'm gonna try it out, i mean really it's the weight of a child, how much could it hurt. I'll rig it temporarily, but you January blahs and the Toronto International Boat show have me craving waves big time.

A battery is excellent ballast and the only way to know how it will affect the boat is to try it, I have had mine in several spots until I settled on the the point of the bow, now the boat is almost level at rest which makes it alot easier to fish since you aren't always walking up or down hill.

You are on the right track to not make it permenent, I have a 16 also and a little weight here or there can make a big difference, I run 3 batts, one in the bow and mid ship.

Try disconnecting it if its an auxiliary. Move to where you want it and try it on the lake. Easily know if you need it there.

Ya thats what I think I'm going to do before mounting anything. Only problem is the lake is frozen solid and I'm looking at my boat in the garage coming up with all of these great ideas I can do with it to make it better
