Is it normal for an over the hub chopper prop to have a very poor hole shot and lots of ventalation.

Im questioning the hub, (Flow tork) and its cracked.

Holds strong after it gets on plane though. Forgot my GPS, but it feels faster. Wow, I thought my highfive threw a rooster tail, this thing is awesome. I did feel it was a bit faster if I trimmed down some though. Its a 15" X 26 Ron Hill.

Ahhhh,,,, Grasshopper.

When you can snatch the pebble from my hand, you will be ready to leave......

har, har, har,,,,

I see you are entering the realm of high performance boating.

*
I insert chuckle here
*

In my experiance, if you're trying to get up out of the hole with a chopper like you were driving a car on a dirt road,,,,,,,

just keep pushing on the gas, but don't let the engine over-rev. and wait until it bites..... it never will.

Forget the cav. or ventilation plate.
If the prop arc is even with, or a little above the bottom of the hull,

that's a good place to start if you're interested in top end.

With a set up like that, to get up & out of the hole-----

Hammer it. Try to keep the tach at, or just under 7000.

You'll know in a few seconds if it'll come up & out or not. If it don't, let the tilt down a bit. If that doesn't work, let the engine down on the mounts a inch and try again.

Once you get it up on plane or just moving forward in general,,,,,, don't let it back down. Stay on plane or above 3000rpm.

And remember:
High rooster tails, and obscenely nose high hull attitudes don't equate to more speed. They show that you're pushing water up into the air with gasoline and horsepower that you could better utilize by pushing your boat forward. And the higher your transom is, the less water it has to push out of the way instead of riding up & over it as the boat goes along.

A boat that goes through the water at speed with the most efficiency, only leaves a flat spot in the water behind it marked by steam and a swirl of exhaust bubbles.

I'm running a 26" Cleaver nowdays on POCO LOCO.
So far, we're at 77mph and 58-5900rpm, where I just run out of horsepower through a 1.87 LU. The only way to get it past 10mph is to just hammer it,,,,,, and wait. Your results should be similar.

Once the prop bites, the tach drops........ then you hammer it again, and the acceleration trys to make your sun glasses into contact lenses.

I hope I'm not stepping on Kenny's toes but while we're waiting --

A stock chopper will act exactly as you describe. They are a decent platform from which to work but you'll probably want to get a custom builder involved.

I would strongly suggest sending it to John Mazar at Mazco. Talk with him, tell him exactly what it does now and what you want it to do. Dont worry about how he does it, just try it when you get it back.

One time someone asked me if I knew anything about race props. "Yep, I know everything about 'em. 636-343-9911." (Johns phone number)

I'll bet you'll like his work so much you end up with one of his RE series props at some point.

Re: Walleyehed, Chopper prop questio

Thanks guys, I had that thought, but when I took the prop off this morning, the hub has bit the big one. It came off in peices. I am going to get a new hub and take the GPS out with me next time and see if I can get the hang of the hole shot. With my trim tabs, I was hoping to get a little better hole shot. There is no doubt that it is faster if I trim down a bit. It was slipping and catching some at moderate speeds due to the hub, may have been slipping some at WOT also. It was slipping so badly when I came in, I almost never got it up at all. I will make my decision if I want to keep it when I try it with the new hub.

When I got through the channel there was another Bass Boat coming up behind me and I new he wanted past, so when we got to open water I had a little trouble getting on plane. We stayed even but I didnt trim out and let him get a little jump on me and he waved like he was going to go on ahead. I waved and gave the by- by wave and he looked at me funny as he was starting to gain a little and was trimmed already. I started to trim and blew right by him. He was surprised as his boat had a 175 and I smoked him bad.

I love it when that happens. :D :D :D
