I have a 1800 Lund Fisherman with a 130 Yamaha 17 pitch aluminum that blows out when I turn hard left or right. I will replace it this spring with a SS prop do you think that a 4 blade 17 will keep the same RPM's? The RPM'S with aluminun is 5800. I also pull tubers with the boat when the walleye bite is slow.

Re: Walleyhed I have a prop Question

I realize your post is directed to Walleyhed but it may not be the props fault for the blowout. With boats like yours getting ever wider (close to eight feet), a hard turn with high trim setting causes the motor to lose its bite. To better illustrate this, look at the pendulum on a clock as your motor and the round disc as the prop. As the pendulum moves right or left, the disc (hence your prop) rotates upward in an arc. On your boat, this upward rotation may be high enough to cause the blowout. Wide Crestliners are also subject to this. A four-blade prop may hang on better and is worth a try and should stay roughly within the same RPM range. Check engine height before spending money on the prop. The four-blade prop will probably help hole shot as well. Talk nicely to your dealer -- they may let you use on for test purposes. Sorry for jumping in but thought you'd be interested in what others have experienced.

Re: Walleyhed I have a prop Question

Thanks Upinsmoke good point and the boat is very wide. Kansas lakes get very rough when the wind blows and the Lund makes me feel safe. The cavitation plate is just below the bottom of the boat maybee 1/16". There has to be a prop that will bite and not blow out with the wide boats.

Re: Walleyhed I have a prop Question

from what I've seen of Yamaha alumimium props, they certainly not the state of the art. I can't comment on their stainless models. A Stiletto or Quicksilver Laser should offer a much better grip on the water.

My feeling is that you will lose about 300 RPM with the stainless, and a bit of top speed, but you can raise the engine at least one hole, maybe two with the four blade and gain it back.

Trim down a bit or slow down in tight turns, problem solved, cost= $0

Re: Walleyhed I have a prop Question

First, do we have anything mounted to the transom bottom such as trasducers, speed sensors, speedometer pitot tubes, etc.????
I assumed the engine is mounted in it's lowest location possible??? (craddle of mount bracket is ON the transom)
And, directly to the transom with no set-back???

Yes Kenny. Transducer is on the back of the boat. The engine is not the lowest but up one hole from the bottom and no set back and yes the craddle of mount is bolted to the transom. Not set back at all. Kenny your good.

Re: Walleyhed I have a prop Question

Kenny your good.
3 words I've never heard from my wife....go figure.
I'm a bit confused here (thinking out-loud)...I have a buddy with an 1800 Tyee with a 115 Johnson looper that will spin a 17 6000 RPM...and he's in the lowest position.
Nothing within 12-15" of the centerline is there??? as far as transducers, etc??
I think you may have some prop wear in the area that "used" to have cup, and I'm guessing the boat has not "always" done this...?
Sorry for so many questions, but the answers provide the key to what we can and can't do.
BTW, don't put much thought into a 4-blade unless you are willing to add a jackplate....it's a performance loss other-wise.
Another thought while I have you here, is check the skeg leading edge, gearcase to bottom for a chunk missing, ding or dent that would disrupt flow-it doesn't take much.

As was mentioned in one of the previous posts...the Yamaha alum prop is "Kinda" a prop...never heard of one cutting loose with the engine that low though.
You may have already, but check that prop and make sure it is a true 17. Post back and I'll give ya my 2 cents.

Re: Walleyhed I have a prop Question

Thanks Kenny for the answers. Its a Merc prop not a Yamaha prop an its a true 17 so the stamp on it says. I have a 19 Merc prop that does not blow out but can only get 5200 RPM's. No damage to the skeg.

Re: Walleyhed I have a prop Question

I looked at my buddy's boat later today...it's a fisherman as well, not the tyee.
The 13-1/4X17 Stiletto works well on his with no blow-out, and as I said, his 115 jonny spins it 6k, the same RPM as the Factory 14X17 alum.
Hard turns in his cause blow-out at speed if you turn REAL hard, but way beyond normal, safe operation.
The Stiletto bites good...I'd recommend it.
