WallyWorld oil change experience

I normally change the oil in all my vehicles, but when temperatures soar above 90 I'll take it somewhere and have it done. I took my Dodge Ram to walmart this weekend and was reminded why doing it yourself is normally the best option. The check-in guy takes my info and tried to upsell all sorts of stuff right off the bat. I declined the vac n' window service, air filter, and wiper blades. I finally told him I simply wanted a basic oil change and the ETA until it would be done. He told me 1 hour. I shopped and in an hour, returned to the service area to see my truck had not even been moved. I had stuff to do, so I cancelled the oil change and left. The oil change tech moved my truck out of line for me and I hopped in to go home. At 45mph driving down a busy main road, my hood flies open without warning, banging the top of my windshield and completely obscuring my view. I quickly glanced in my rear view and saw no one too close behind, so I nailed the brakes as hard as I could hoping the force of the stop would cause the hood to fall back down. The hood did not budge, so I had to stop in the middle of the road and get out to pull the hood back down. The hinges are hopelessly bent and I was barely able to get it to close. I went back and there was a finger pointing contest between the old man that wrote the ticket and the tech that moved my truck. They took pictures and a claim was filled out. Hopefully they'll make it right.

I know you're probably po'd, but one thing I've come to realize that ALL mechanics make a mistake now and then. Their worth comes from how they respond to those mistakes and the responsiblity they take in correcting the problem. I hope it works out for you the best way that it can.

When anyone messes with your vehicle, it is your responsibility to give it a quick once over to make sure all is ok to drive.

I can't even imagine a circumstance where the hood was unlatched to the point the wind would catch it, and not notice it right away.

I agree.....
I had the rear brakes done on my truck recently & was glad I looked under the hood because someone had left the cap off of the master cylinder!....
I'm sure that would have been quite a mess.....

When I pulled out onto the main rd and got to speed, I had maybe 2 seconds between noticing the hood floating and the sudden opening of it. When I pulled into the bay, the check-in guy popped my hood (unbeknownst to me) allegedly to check what kind of oil my truck required. He apparantly shut it so it was just resting on top if the latch. When I left with no work performed, I had no reason to check anything since I had no idea they already opened the hood. Truth be told, I've never checked that on the rare occasions I actually have the oil changed. I will now, that's for sure.

If Walmart makes this right, then I'll certainly follow up with something positive. I'm not a Walmart basher or anything.

Here at the Toyota dealership we had a new 07 Camry towed in.... They had gotten an oil change at Midas Muffler shop for $18.99 ....... cheap...... well the engine is toast. We put it up on a lift and the entire bottom of the car is oil coated and the filter is missing. This one is going to cost Midas some big bucks. Hey less than 6k on the car!

It's not 90 degrees all day, why not change it in the morning, or late in the evening? That's what I do.

I will NEVER let anybody touch my vehicle unless its for some reason that I can't, and then I'll do an inspection of the engine before driving off. I've done it before, and didn't find anything. Our ol' mechanic is pretty darn good.

I've never taken my car there. I have had good results at the quick-change place close to my work in the past with my Explorer. I take my new truck to the dealer for scheduled maintenance now. Anyway, maybe the first guy to check your truck is in the habit of leaving it unlatched. That's a bad idea imo. Your vehicle exited the process prematurely and the rest is history. I hope they make good on it.

When it's an oil change there no other way then do it yourself unless it's not practical to DIY. When I was temporarily resided in Connecticut I lived in an apartment and have no tools. I was forced to take my new car to a local place to have the oil changed. On one occasion, while looking over the bill I noticed that they've put 10w30 in instead of 5w30 that my car required. I flipped out and make them flushed out the 10w30 and put the correct oil in. I moved to a different town and went to another place. This is one that have 15 minutes oil change and car wash/detailing services. I've only notices this kind of establishment in the Northeast by the way. This is one of those fancy place where they hand towel dry your car. Anyway, I asked this Puerto Rican (not that it had anything to do with it) service guy what kind of oil he going to put in my car and his reply was 10w30. I told him that my car need 5w30 and he said there is no different between the two.  I told him to not touch my car and went have a chat with the service manager. I think that guy lost his job.

Re: WallyWorld oil change experience

Just got a call from claims. I have to say, they responded very quick and the process to have my truck repaired is simple. Just fax in an estimate, and they cut a check to mail out next day.

This was sort of a wake up call as far as checking out my vehicle after work has been done and I believe i386 called it when he postulated that the cancelled service was mostly to blame. I'd be willing to bet there's going to be a policy change regarding how cars are handled prior to the service actually beginning though.

Don't forget your going to need a rental car while you truck is in the shop for repairs.

Good call, I completely forgot to ask the claims guy about that. If they'll pay for one up front, I'll take a rent car for a couple days. If not or if I have to pay up front and get reimbursed, I'll probably drive my other car rather than mess with it. It's got no AC at the present time, but I've got a short commute.

Thanks!
