Want BIG fat tires for my trailer...

Can you recommend oversized fat tires that could temporarily support transporting the boat over sand?! I'm thinking about installing a set of tires on the trailer that I can lower/raise to tranport my boat over sandy back roads when getting to the camping site or beach.

I would not be using these at highway speeds - only for special situations to get across soft sandy areas. Anybody ever seen that done?!

My boat is an aluminum Smokercraft 17 ft boat (deep V) towed behind a '95 LandCruiser FZJ80 that goes anywhere.

I think your plan sounds like overkill.... that's a light boat.... adjust for a higher tongue weight and thus less axle weight and possibly install wider highway tires. Possibly the wide low tires often found under pontoon boats and pictured above.... the key to driving and towing in sand is to keep the speed up (within reason of course) and never stop in a low spot

They make fat boat trailer tires, people use them at sand launches

Pontoon trailer tires! twice as wide as regular and rated for highway so you don't need to change them.

I also vote for the E rated 10" pontoon trailer tires. They're about as close as you can get to floatation tires, and they have the guts to withstand regular towing to the lake.

Re: Want BIG fat tires for my trailer...

Just use your normal road tyres and let the pressure down. To about 8 to 10 psi... This causes the tyre to elongate rather than increasing its width. Width is what makes working in sand difficult. It builds up a small 'hill' of sand the tyre must climb over, better to have a long, narrow tyre than a short, wide one. Same surface area on the sand, but less of a 'hill' to climb....

I have a 2-1/2 ton boat I launch regularly off sandy beaches. Standard tyres with reduced pressure have never let me down (no pun intended )...

I've done a couple of beach launches with some friends ... wow, is that a different way to get a boat in the water. I don't envy you guys who put in on the beaches.

Putting in is the easy bit... Getting out again, now THAT can be a challenge...:D But if it was easy, the fishing/diving wouldn't be as good.. ;)

Just thought you guys would enjoy the South African way to beach launch and retrieve a boat...
You'd better have some good, thick gel coat on the hull...
