i have a 1966, merc 650 (65hp) [s/n 1897689].
the thing about this eng. is that it seems to have a magneto rather than an alternator. at least that's what it looks like to me.
(like small aircraft have)
anyone have an idea what type of tach. i can use with this eng. and tips on how to install.
all the ones i have looked up seem to be for more modern eng's and i'm not sure if they are applicable to my type of motor.
any help would be greatly appreciated.

Assuming it's electric start, it has an alternator under the flywheel. You can use most any standard alternator driven tach by picking the signal off one leg of the stator where it meets the rectifier.

-W
