Hello everyone,I am wanting to change out the 2 drain plugs in my lower unit of my 1989 Evinrude 70hp,I want to change them out as the bottom drain plug can be a real pain in the butt to get out,,so I would like to know do they make drain plugs for my outboard that uses a Allen wrench or Star wrench instead of using a 1/2 inch flat head screw driver? I always change my gear oil every season so I want something that I know when I put a wrench on it,it will not slip..I would like to get the new drain plugs order asap as I figure I might have to the end of October depending on the weather before I put my boat a way for the winter..

Thanks for any help you all can give me..

So I did a quick search, and thought I might have the answer..
But, Another model # of the same year/hp had a different part number..

So, The answer is Yes.. They are available in Allen head.. ("Star" is a torx, didn't see those..) instead of flat head..
But, What is your exact model # for your engine?
That'll point to the right one(s)..

Most drain screw threads are 3/8, so just about any lower unit drain screw should work regardless of the type of head, but check the size first just to be safe.

Sorry for such a late reply back to everyone,I been really busy helping my good friend at the Marina getting boats out of the water and winterizing and shrink wrapping all sorts of sizes of boat plus getting his barge painted..I manage to get a new set of drain plugs that can be installed by a allen wrench vs slotted screw driver, man this make it so much easier to take off and on..I went to a Evinrude Dealer who did have them in stock..

Thank You everyone who had helped me out..

Sorry jbuote, all I do know is the motor is a 1989 70HP Evinrude VRO..But I did get the correct drain plugs from a Evinrude dealer that is about 20 miles away from me.. The bottom Drain Plug was $16.99 because it is the one that has a magnet all stainless and the top plug was $6.00..
