I have a Johnson J6RCRM, serial E5872912

Can you tell me the year. I tryed to get it apart today to check the waterpump impeller . I took out two bolts on bottom and one bolt at the upper leading edge of gearcase. Seems loose but won't drop open. Is there something else I need to disconnect? How do I disconnect it? Do not want to force it.

John.... That's a 1984 6hp Johnson. THere are three bolts which retain it, and you appear to have removed them. I would suspect that the lower unit is stuck on either (or both) the driveshaft splines or the water pump tube. In either case, it's a matter of prying it down and off.

Joe: This was my first post. Never in a million years did I expect such a quick response. Thanks.
Just finished pulling of the gear case. The pump was frozen on. Lots of penetrating oil an patience. Do you know where I can get an exploded view, free online, of this engine. The water pump and impellor sit on top a white plastic piece below it. Whats that?

Thanks a millon.

That plastic item, under the water pump impeller plate, is a gearcase seal and cover assy.

Got it apart and have new pump kit. THE PROBLEM now is how to get the key back into the impellor. Is the drive shaft supposed to come out as part of the lower section? I see the lower end of the shaft and it is fine. The flat part of keyway is up high. If the shaft is supposed to come out that would make it simple, but I do not want to force anything. How do I get the shaft out?
