Want to do marine vinyl but...

The floor of my Alaskan boat is already vinyl but the tops of the rod lockers and livewell were carpeted. I removed the carpet and was going to put carpet back in, but since this is a fishing boat I figured I should put vinyl in if possible. My question, how do I put vinyl in when the spacing on the hatches and livewell doors were spaced for carpet? In other words, I think If I went vinyl, the space between hatch and panels would be larger as the diameter of vinyl is smaller than the carpet that everything was cut for. What can I do to remedy this?

What about an inch of foam under the vinyl?

Yes! Something like that would be ideal. Where would I get foam that I could do that with? Also, I believe you're thinking I should only put the foam on the edges and not under everything, correct?

I would really need pics to see exactly what could be done. Foam under everything will give you the padded look and fill in the gaps. Any foam shop will have anything you need.
