Im a newb here, so feel free to correct me in anything im thinking of doing lol.. Well, I really dont feel safe running an engine without a tach or temp gauge. I guess im just useto it from building cars and bikes and relying on those peticular gauges. Now my engine is a 2 stroke 1982 merc 50hp. what i was thinking as far as the temp. is i can mount the sending unit right ar the top of the power head where the fitting is for the tell-tale. would this give me an accurate enough reading? i figure this would work because the temp of the water will be at its highest when coming right from the head correct?

as for the tach.. im clueless. Ive searched on here and found that i can hook it up to my voltage regulator? anyone whos done this please, learn me. Ive got 2 spots on my gauge cluster where i can fit these gauges and it will look "factory" so im all for adding them. thanks for any advice

Re: wanting to add Tach and temp gauge.

Joe, The stator drives the tachometer. You probably only have a rectifier (no VR), so the tach (must be a marine tach to work) would connect to either yellow wire on the rectifier.

That motor has no thermostat, so a temp gauge is useless. Hook up a water pressure gauge instead. Hook it to any plug you find on the cylinderhead water jacket, or install a brass tee where the telltale elbow is and then reinstal the telltale elbow and the gauge nipple.
