I am very new to the boating experience. So any advice that anyone has is going to be much appreciated. Thank you

The boat that I have recently purchased has a 35 hp Wards Sea King outboard on it. I am guessing the the year of manufacturing at about 1965-70. At this time I do not have the model # with me (it is all at home in a safe place). The problem that I have discovered is that when the drive is put into reverse there is no noticable reverse thrust. The engine RPM revs in responce to the amount of reverse throttle that I give and there appears to be some motion at the prop judging by the activity in the water but the boat goes no where.

Hi Grant
Please post back with the mod# of your motor. Seaking is a Wards brand name. The motors were built by several differnt companies. I am sure with a little more info we can get to the bottom of this.

Your motor is a 66 built by West Bend.41.49 cu. in.24:1 fuel mix,.020 point gap,H8J plug @.030.
West Bend was purchased by Chrysler about this
time so Chrysers are probably similar. You need to
find yourself a manual. There may be a generic manual here or on ebay,amazon.com,repairmanual.com
and possibly the library.
There is a fairly involved adjustment procedure
that may solve your problem. Before adjusting the
linkage try shifting by hand with the cable unhooked. If it works you may be able to adjust the cable to solve your problem.

Hi Grant
I agree with Steelspike. My list shows your motor being made under the Chrysler banner. Not tring to split hairs with Steelspike here, I just feel it will be easier for you to find manuals, parts and other info for a Chrysler than a West Bend. Even though some models are the same. I also feel that the adjustment idea is valid. You may want to remove the prop and have a look see. Also drain and refill the gear oil in the lower unit. It is a good idea to disable the ignition system while conducting tests and working in this area. This could be as simple as removing the spark plug wires. Keep us up to date and let us know what you find.

Steelespike, alcan.....Thanks!
I will hunt down a manual as suggested.
Is it really possible that it might be as simple as an adjustment to hopefully fix my lack-o-reverse issues? In the back of my mind, I fear that I may have a serious mechanical problem
I am off to find me that manual and I will keep you posted.
