I recently accuired a new to me pontoon boat that has a 1986 yamaha 115 on it. This motor had recently been swapped to this boat and it still has a few adjustment that need to be dialed in to make it operate as it should. I found a 84 manual on line and ordered it to have some idea of what was going on in general, but it doesn't have very many diagrams and the ones that it does have are usually partial diagrams that do not show the whole system.

By looking around I now have the choke connected and the boat runs and starts generally good, but I still feel that everything is not hooked up right.

The remote control has what I take to be a warm up lever or a fast idle lever that doesn't seem to move or be properly hooked to anything. If I lift it up I can not feel any mechanical fritction nor does the boat idle any faster or slower. In one diagram it looks like the arm is hooked to to an off round center ecentric and that this should move the magneto control lever on the engine. Since this doesn't appear to be happening I believe that the problem is likley in the remote itself, but before I start tearing into things I thought I would post here to see how this is supposed to work.

1) What is the function of the lever? Is it designed to give it more throttle or change the timing to make it easier to start or both?
2) Should you be able to feel a mechanical resistance when you use the lever?
3) Are there any common problems with this remote, parts that wear ect?
4) What is the proper starting procedure for this motor?

The boat is currently in the water as I do not have a trailer for it, and I will need to get some help with me when I work on it since I can not see the motor from the remote. Thanks for any help in getting this set up right.

that sounds like the fast idle lever. It allows you to increase the rpm of the engine without putting the engine into gear.

take off the engine cover and check to see if anything is moving. What about with the engine in gear? will it throttle up?

On my 84 yamaha you engage the choke and turn the key. If yours starts it sounds like you have got it sorted.

It starts fine especially now that I have the clutch hooked up, but I can not tell that lifting the lever is moving anything on the motor. It does not increase the rpm's so I would say that it is some how ot connected. I will have to wait until I can get some one to go with me to verify that nothing is moving on the motor. Right now I am trying to get itto idle as smooth as possible and hopehully get it to shift with out grinding at all. Neither of these are bad now, but I am hopeful that I can dial them in better. The motor runs great and everything works and shifts except the fast idle.

I would say the problem is most likely in the controls, not the motor.
The high idle moves the same cable as the throttle, only without putting the engine into gear. So if you can increase the engine rpm with the throttle, the hi idle problem is in the controls. If you cant, the problem is in the engine, the cable might be unhooked or badly adjusted.
