Warning alarm horn

Motor is a 1994 Johnson Oceanrunner and fairly new to me. The warning horn does not function as is should, at least a start up. (Hasn't overheated to test the other functions-per temp. gauges). I've read other posts and assumed a radioshack piezo will not work in its place. It is the type with purple lead, tan lead and black lead. I wired up the old buzzer and do not get a sound and assumed the buzzer was bad. I did try a regular 12v piezo just to see what happened and it stays on constantly. Is this normal for these generic piezos or do I possibly have something else going on with the sensors. The VRO harness is unplugged by the way. Thank you all as always.

It's usually easier and simpler to just get a replacement OEM warning horn. If you need to test it, disconnect one of the overheat sensors at the head and ground the lead to the harness to a clean engine ground....with the key on. This should give you a steady tone indicating an overheat.

I guess it would be nice to tell everyone that its a 200 hp. the old horn was tested directly to a battery (straight from pos. to neg. posts on battery with no sound at all. I guess my question is, how is the OEM buzzer different from a 12v piezo. I didn't intend to use the piezo permanently, they are available to me at work so I thought I'd try it

OBJ, I dont have an issue with getting it to turn on. Its getting the test horn to shut off that is the problem!! The only way I can get the horn to shut off is to disconnect the plug with tan and black wire that goes to what I assume to be the power pack. I did try unplugging the port/starboard cylinder head temp sensors, but the horn continued. Is it that a regular piezo WILL NOT EVER work, or that they are just not as good as OEM. It seems to me that somewhere the circuit is closed, sounding the alarm. I'm sure the old horn doesnt work because I hooked directly to battery, as i said earlier. That's as far as I'm going to take this problem. I'd love for it to be perfect, but I mix my fuel and constantly look at temp gauge so its not much of a problem.....yet
