warning alarm testing

Can someone tell me how to test the warning alarm on the remote control? It is on a 1994 Evinrude 112 SPL. I looked through diagrams and through the service manual, but it doesn't get specific(or at least I can't find it). The alarm box has a black wire coming out that is grounded. It has two tabs on it. On tab has a tan wire on it. That goes to the temp switches. The other tab has two purple wires on it. One wire goes to the ignition switch, and I am not sure where the other goes. I assume if the purples have powers and you ground the tan wire tab the alarm should sound? Every once in a while when I would turn the key on to start the alarm would sound for a second. I know that is a self check, but it doesn't do it all the time. What makes it self check? How do you know if the self check is working?
Also I read about 60 degee and 90 degree motors and loopers and crossflows. Which is this motor?

Then what I was reading is that the 1994 motor may not have the self test feature. If that is the case can I buy any old alarm and hook it up instead of spending 60 bucks on the factory one?

You have a 90* crossflow mtr. To check the horn disconnect the tan wire on your cyl head at the temp sender, turn your key on and and ground the tan wire coming from the mtr wiring harness. If the horn sounds, it's okay. If it doesn't get the correct one. It's cheaper than a p/h rebuild. The self test is built into the horn itself.
