warning buzzer

just bought a 1994 23ft bayline with a 3.0 mercruiser with 383 hrs on it.
i was looking at the wiring yesterday and noticed that there was a wire off in the front of the motor. i put it back on where it looks like it came off and the motore started to buzz . i called to boat store and they told me that it was the water temp warning buzzer. is there something wrong if it buzzing even if the motor is hot.

the pickup can go bad i bet its just stuck and needs replaced maybe someone will come up with a way of testing it but i don't think there is?

overheat sensor should be "Open", i.e. no connection to the threads on the senor when it is less than the set temp (I think it is 220 - anyone confirm?). if it is cold and making the alarm go off there is something wrong with the sensor.

Make sure you did not attach it to the temp sending unit, this one is not a switch but variable resistance, and will make the alarm go off.

I would presume this is a tan with blue strip wire? They are the alarm wires.

Here is a picture of both the temperature sending unit, and the temperature alarm switch, on my 3.0L. The temp switch for the alarm has the red band, and the tan/blue wire goes there (my wire is solid white, but I replaced it with the correct tan/blue later).

You can compare this with your setup....

thank you the pix of the motor temp sensors my looking at the pix i dont have a warining sensor it just the temp guage. i guess the other one doesnt get hooked up,?

Does a 5.7lt V8 2BBL (yr 1999) have the same setup?

are the temperature switch and temperature sender both in the thermostat?

Sounds like you have what I did...a 3.0L that the previous owner did not order with the audible warning option! What I found is that the wires are present at the engine...I had the buzzer under the helm...but none of the switches on the engine. I purchased the oil pressure switch, the engine temp switch, and a new outdrive lube bottle with the level sensor. Hooked up the wiring...and have the full functioning alarm system!

I love the peace of mind that the buzzer gives me...I 'trashed' my other boat's engine when it overheated, and I wasn't paying good attention!

I can't attest to the location...but the temperature alarm switch for your engine will have a black band, instead of the red band. Take a look around the thermostat housing...usual, and logical, location!

Great choice.

You can go from running fine to "oh Sh!T" in no time flat. When I first got my boat, the alarms were disabled... got them re-attached. It is a very annoying alarm, but would rather have that sound than "Thunk!"

oh yea, now I can't leave my key in the "ON" position for 50 hours like I did just after putting a new hour meter on... now I have 15 seconds and the alarm will remind me
