warning buzzer

I have a 1988 80 HP Merc 3 cylinder. It has oil injection that is under the cowling. I went to start the engine for the first time this year and the warning buzzer comes on when the key is turned on, with out starting the engine. I understand this to be a low oil level warning? The oil is almost full. The engine started right away and ran normall in the yard with the ears. I am planning on using a tank of premix and make sure the injector is working. So i am guessing a sensor in the oil resivor is stuck, sending the low oil signal?
Any thoughts or ideas that i am missing here?
Thanks Joe

Re: warning buzzer

PROBLEM: Warning horn stays on when ignition key is turned to “ON” position.

If horn sounds a continuous “beep”, the engine overheat
sensor may be faulty. Disconnect overheat sensor
(BLACK Wire) and turn ignition key to “ON” position.
If horn still sounds a continuous “beep”, the warning
module is faulty. Replace module and retest. If
“beep” does not sound, then engine overheat sensor
is faulty. Replace and retest.

Do you have the s/n of your engine?

If you do not have the service manual, which should be 90-13645-2 for your 1988, see my message to you in Notifications at the top of this page.

Update. Looking at the engine and the excellent wireing diagram, my engine does not have a warning module. I unhooked one wire going to the tank sensor and it stopped buzzing. The rest of the circuit seems ok. I ran out of daylight and did not get a chance to drain the tank. Fazbullet will know this. Hard to tell from the pics i can see. But is the float/magnet built inside the tank? It looks like when you buy a new sensor, the float part does not come with it? I appreciate any more input. Joe

Re: warning buzzer

Ya got to get the tank to get float. Remove tank and drain and wash out as sometime the oil will jell and cause it to stick.

Re: warning buzzer

UPdate.

Took tank out and pieces fell out from the inside. Decided it was not worth messing with so i replaced the tank and the sensor.
Changed both and it solved my issue. Two questions. Is it necessary to do anything special to bleed the air out of the system, or can i just run the engine with a tank of premix to check it! Any ideas for a good chemical to help me clean grease and oil off the old engine that wont damage the gell coat on the Whaler?
Thanks

Duckman,

Glad ya found yer issue.....1) Not too familiar with your setup but my pump has a small'ish air bleed screw on the body, maybe yours does too. 2) I'd use/start with Simple Green and a tad bit of precision of pressure washing.

BTW, Lived down your way(Gardnerville/Minden) few yrs back, worked in Benly's old shack after GE gave him $600M for it, rummer has it, he wanted it all in Gold but, reluctantly he took a check from them in the end, ho hum.

On a higher note........You ever get down to Carson, have a beer for me at Firkin and Fox, I'm flying down just for their bread pudding....Dang!! Sry to hear about the wolf closing :(

Go Ace's!!
