Warning horn on Evinrude XP 175..Overheat?

Hey guys, I need some advice! I was out running @ 2500 RPM the other day and I started getting a warning horn @ every second...if I stopped, it would go away. Back on plane, warning horn, and so on. Eventually, I think the engine went into SLOW mode as I was limping back to the dock. At this point, I am figuring the engine overheated a bit.....pee stream is strong. Messed around with it today...at idle, starboard bank intermittently (as in different engine runs) runs real hot...@ 170-180 at idle or high idle (using an infared thermo). At this point I'm thinking starboard thermostat is bad. Out of curiosity, I disconnected the the temp sensor leads at the heads, and the horn went off again, with both banks @ 145 at idle. Now I am really confused. Just to clarify, it is about one beep per second, not constant beep. At this point I am thinking a fuel restriction to the starboard bank is causing overheating in that bank? Any help would be greatly appreciated! (Also, even when the engine is idling @ 145, starboard bank second cylinder down is running about 10 to 15 degrees hotter then all the rest.)

Check your compression! The overheat horn is constant. The fuel restriction alarm is constant (if equiped) The oil alarm is intermittant. The reason that center cylinder is hot maybe that it may be grinding the cylinder wall.

You may have multple faults with that engine. The engine put itself into SLOW mode when the engine head temps reach 205 degrees. That's considered an overheat. RPM's are limited to 2500 rpm's. The warning horn that sounded is different: There are two oil warning horns on that engine. A single beep every 15 or 20 seconds indicates the oil tank is getting low on oil. A pulsating beep every second (one second on-one second off) is a warning horn from the VRO pump that you have a major problem with the oiling system on the fuel pump. That may be the horn you mentioned in your post. Possible that your pump may not be drawing oil through the oil line. Check the white sight glass on the oil line by the pump.

I forgot to mention that my VRO pump is blocked off and I am running premix. The oil sensor line is also disconnected. I am going to change out starboard t-stat today...and hopefully that regulates the temp problems. The alarm I am getting seems to be fuel restriction....if it sounds again, I am going to try pumping the fuel bulb to see if it makes it go away.

A fuel restriction horn is a constant horn, just like an overheat. Good idea to pump the fuel bulb. Are you running 3/8" fuel line from the tank to the engine? Check your anti-siphon valve for internal debris around the ball valve.

update: replaced both thermostats and poppet valves...seemed to correct the starboard bank running hot, today on muffs, i ran it @ 2000 rpm for a few minutes, and the starboard bank was hot again, @ 170 +. Port bank was @ 140. I am thinking I might have swollen deflectors on the starboard side. Any ideas?

Before you pull the head, you might pull off the head cover. Inspect the passages for debris, etc. What you find in there will also be inside the block. Depending on what you find you may still want to pull the head and check the rubber diverters/deflectors.
