Warning Horn-Proveout

I have a 1983 Evinrude 90 hp. with the remote shift control. The shift box is white with a warm up lever, tach. lead and the key/prime switch. It is the type that is designed to mount on the gunnel.

My question is: can one rewire the warning horn to buzz or beep a short blast when the key is turned on?

The newer John/Rudes I have owned had this warning horn proveout feature and I liked it.

djohns19,
I can think of a way of making it work using a timer/relay but I am surprised that motor doesn't already have it. My "84" 150 does.
Suppose you ran a power lead to the buzzer thru a timer/relay that was actuated when you turned the key to on.
The alarm functions could be controlled by the original power supply leads.
Kinda barbaric but functional. Sounds like a job for Schematic.
Good luck

The self test function is in the horn. You can install a push button switch on dash panel ,one wire to tan lead on alarm horn, the other lead to ground. Key on push button alarm will sound.

Clanton,

Thanks, would a "newer" model horn work and be compatible with the older circuitry?

Re: Warning Horn-Proveout

Guess I misunderstood. I thought you wanted to make it an auto-function.

MG,

That's exactly what I want to do-thanks for the link-very interesting.

I am basically just wondering if one of the newer horns has the automatic function already and will retrofit.

Again, thanks MG.

Yes you can use one of the newer horns,it should have 3 wires, before year model 1995 which changed to system check.

Re: Warning Horn-Proveout

so does that mean the 3wire buzzers between 83 and 95 have a built in timer that gives ground for a moment?

djohns i understand what you're wanting, just don't know of a solution if the 3wire horn isn't what you think it is. i know on my 86rude140, the buzzer is simple type. it pulls hot off ign swtch, and goes to grnd via the temp sensors on ea cyl bank (and via vro altho i haven't traced that circuit down, its not used). i tested my horn by shorting temp sensor wires to grnd. so what mg said seems an alternate course given the 3wire doesn't do it. and i know the 555 is a very robust generic timer that can be used for most anything. but since you only need a momentary grnd off the sensor side of your buzzer, why not use the simple momentary swtch clanton suggstd? if you go with a timer, you'll have to add other components and put it all in a watertight enclosure... just a thought

whatever you come up with, let us know, i might put it to work also ;)

Re: Warning Horn-Proveout

another thought: it may work to tie a wire off the hot side of the solenoid to your buzzer. i haven't tried it, but i imagine when your solenoid engaged, you'd get the grnd thru the starter fields, which would be the momentary buzz you're talking about. of course, you'd have to put a diode inline to prevent the 12v from going back up the circuit and out to a grnd temp/vro sensor.... :D :D :D

any pros/cons on that thought

Order the factory replacement horn and you will get one with the selftest feature. There is an electronic circuit mounted on the horn and it has a separate ground wire. The rest is the same.

Its like Seahorse said, but I would not lay any money on the counter until the parts person opened the box and showed me the horn, and I would want a fresh one, they use to go bad setting on the shelf.

Seahorse is right. The newer horns come with the self test feature.

Good luck!

Thanks all. Appreciate the help.

Good tip about the horns on the shelf. I'll find a dealer that DOES NOT have one and have them order it. :D
