Warning lights 2006 E-Tec

2006 40hp E-Tec. My first tank of oil is getting low. However, the low oil light will only come on with the key in the run position, engine off. Once the engine is started, the light goes out and stays out.

Is this correct? The owners manual seems to indicated that the light will remain on at all times.
