I have a 1966 Duo which had a Merc 500 Shortshaft on it til I sold it due to too much work needing to be done on it. I bought a mid 70's Merc 500 Longshaft and need to know if I made a bad move with switch to a long shaft. What might be the good of having a longshaft? What would be the bad part of it? Thanks. I need to know ASAP! Thank you again.

Re: Was a longshaft a bad choice?

putting a long shaft, on a short shaft transom, you have too much foot in the water. i is increased drag, can cause water to spray up in front of the motor, back over the transom. decreases efficiency. the solution is to build or buy a jack plate, which raises the motor to fit properly. i run a long shaft 50 rude on them short shaft transom. i had the 3/16 aluminum bent and built this one my self, $55.00.
