Was Evinrude 15854B originally an Electric Start? And....if it was......????

Hi.

I have an Evinrude 15HP 1978 Model 15854B. I have looked up the model number and everywhere I have checked it appears to be inconclusive as to whether this engine was originally a rope start (only) or Electric with rope. I thought that OMC model numbers would indicate things like that.

It does have the starter motor mount at the exhaust cover area (no motor of course) and it has a double geared flywheel. It also has a rectifier connected to a terminal block.

My reason for asking is I would like to know what differences there are is the ignition system if this indeed was an electric start motor. I currently have no spark and I need to see if the parts required are worth it.

The other odd thing I notice is the 2 coils on the engine are part #585508. Looking those up...they say 1985 and newer. Mine is a 1978.....and the parts listings for it say coil #514208. Anyone have any comment on that? Did the PO put the wrong coils on...or are those twop numbers interchangeable?

The motor is new to me; the previous owner knows nothing.

Thanks, Chuck

To get the model number breakdown you have to have a 1980 or newer engine.
By looking at the parts breakdown the coil numbers don't add up.
Take a look at the site below nto compare numbers.
As far as the starter goes, I think the engine is set up for it, just not ordered on it. It would be esay to convert, might be a little costly.

Yes; the coils might be wrong. I really don't know what the difference is between them.

I looked on CDI's site...and they don't offer a straight answer either. In one area they say the coils I have are for 1985 and newer....but in the application spreadsheet it says that a 1978 engine uses the ones that I have.

Leroy; I need you :)

Doesn't the CDI site give you the resistance specs for different coils? If the resistance is different between the two, one might not work on in place of the other, so you might need to install the proper coils.
