Couldnt keep 5.0 XL running /idling so I assumed it was time for a rebuild.1st step (after changing fuel/water sep) was to disconnect fuel line at carb filter.Filter was caked and filled with what resembled gelled chicken fat.Filled to the brim.Cleaned filter with carb cleaner and put back on carb.Started motor and low and behold it idled and ran just fine.Got lucky!! Gonna run a few more times and check and replace filter. No rebuild just yet!! I also filled new fuel/water sep with 1/3 Seafoam,1/3 Berrymens Chemtool,1/3 new gas.Figured a turbo cleaning of carb couldnt hurt.Guess I got lucky, especially since I have never pulled a carb off before.Charlie

So, where did the 'gel' come from? The tank? You need to empty it, and have it cleaned out....

Ethanol pudding. I just cleaned it out of the float bowl of 3 dirt bikes before we went to Moab this weekend.

there is no mechanic in a can, the only way to clean it is to pull the fuel system apart.

X2 , it would be a good idea to pull the sending unit and suck off the tank bottom, likely you have contamination in the tank. Would hate to see you think it's completely fixed and motor out half an hour and have the engine quit on you

If it were from the tank there would have been some evidence in the fuel/water sep.I poured it into clear jar and let sit and not even a drop of water in it.Used it in an old lawn mower just to see if it were bad gas and it was not bad at all.
