Have a heavy,2000+ pound deep vee. went from 37 mph on gps at 4850 rpm after rebuilding carbs this summer, when i bought the rig .to today i changed the NGK PLUGS to champion QL77, recommended on this site, put an ounce of blue marine STABIL in the tank and went down to the lake behind my place. raining and had lake to myself. played with the power trim and hit 41.6 mph at 54oo rpm. motor is a 1989 110 vro removed. next step will be 80-1 AMSOIL SABER OIL and AMSOIL in the gear case. i did lift the motor as high as it will go on the transom. love the increases that cost so little. TT

one ounce of any additive in a tank of gas wont make that much difference. i personally have had no luck with ngk plugs in any motor...from cars to obs. i would not go to 80:1 with any oil....stick with 50:1 . sounds like raising the motor on the transom was the key to allowing the motor to work as it should.

Better conditions? Proper transom height? Trimmed properly? Cleaner plugs, that the engine was built around? Probably not the measly ounce of Stable in the tank...
41.6 MPH is pretty darn respectable for an old engine on the back of a boat like you described (in very general terms). How much more do you anticipate getting out of the old girl while running her starved for oil?

Raising motor = less drag = more speed.
The rest are immaterial in my opinion.
Make sure you are still pulling in enough cooling water though.

By the way, the best place for NGK plugs is at least 500 miles away from a Johnson / Evinrude outboard motor.
Just my personal thoughts though.

Agree with above, most likely reason for increase was proper motor height/trim.

Another possibility was that one of the plugs was fouled, faulty, not firing a cylinder. Test them out of curiousity.

Going to the Champion plugs was a good idea. It might have given you a bit more power, but not enough to notice.

I would not recommend any oil not NMMA certified for TC-W3, hype and snake oil not withstanding, and I would not recommend any fuel mix leaner than 50:1. Any gain (unlikely) would only be at the expense of added risk.

Fine tuning the outboard height and trim is probably responsible for almost all of your gain, as my friends have said. There may be a little (very little) room for fine tuning your prop selection, but I would not mess with her further.

I run NGK's in all my customers engines and never had any problems with them in performance. Be careful on that engine height on a deep vee as in a turn you can force water away from water intakes.
