I have a GE top loader that is just out of warrenty. It started making a loud sqeaking noise during agitation. I greased the suspension rods with white lithium, but it didn't help. Then proceeded to pull the agitator off, and the noise goes away. What is causing the agitator to squeak, and how do I fix it?

if this has the white hub that the agitator fits over that has a bolt in the top that hub may be getting stripped out pull it off and see if the splines are wore out.

Re: Washing Machine Repair

I took a major appliance repair class in a Texas state college.

I'm thinking that the main bearing is slowly seizing up or that the belt is slipping. I'm thinking you need to tighten the belt.

Is it intermittent or continuous? Intermittent it's probably the bearing for the agitator, continuous, the belt.

Thanks for the replies. I took the bolt off and inspected the splines. They looked fine, so i put it back together and tightened the bolt real good. Just ran an empty load and there is no noise. Not fully convinced it is fixed. The machine is just over a year old.

The noise was intermittent. Let's see what it does after a full load.

Belt noise can be intermittent, due to the weight of the load or if the loads offset.

How many machine have you actually worked on becuase the agitator housing has never had a bearing in it from all the types of machines I have worked on.(I used to own laundramats and repaired all my machines).

Also, the main bearing on a top loader typically only is used during spin.

Re: Washing Machine Repair

I had a brand new GE washer that made a bad squeaking noise.
It was the front panel. It was loose at the bottom. There were some bendable tabs that went into slots in the frame. The tabs had not been bent enough to secure the front panel and a squeak resulted during the agitation cycle.

Pulled the machine out, leaned it back, got under it, tightened the tabs and no more squeak.

I don't know if this is your problem or not, but mine sounded like a mechanical problem, but was just a loose front panel.

Re: Washing Machine Repair

Any time I've dealt with an agitator squeak, it's been a nail or something stuck under it.

Re: Washing Machine Repair

Bearing squeak from the motor maybe.
Designed in post warranty failure possibly.
