Washing out a newly machined block?

Brought a block to a known very reputable marine Machine shop to have it done .20 Over. Its a 1993 115. I purposely brought it there with the Bubbleback attached...Mainly because those bolts werent looking too good, and he was going to call me before machining.

He went ahead and bored it...Thats fine, I was going to anyway. It came out very nice. He even measured for me in person when picking it up.

QUESTION IS THIS:

Slag, the filings from the boring....While it appears they gave it a quick spray possibly. I can see filings around the block....Will a good Soaking in a tub, followed by a pressure spray-out in all passages, be good enough(repeat multiple times? Really dont want to drill out all those Exhaust plate bolts.

But dont want to scratch a very nice finished block either!

Take it to a car wash and give it a good pressure wash cleaning. When you think it's clean, do it again. Then blow dry it and oil it down good.

haha, thanks Boobie--Hadnt thought of that one...I'm asking mostly because I was wondering if slag could get caught somewhere where it wouldnt wash out.

Will be giving it a try tomorrow--see how clean I can get it.

Scrubbing the bores, nooks and crannies with a bristle brush will also help dislodge filings and shaving. Oil up some lint free cloths and wipe the cylinder walls examine cloth for any metal filings. If found keep washing.

I am pretty anal when cleaning a block but it is clean when done......1) wash in plastic tote with hot water/prple power and commode brush, scrub bore liberally. 2) with a piece of heavy cord(I use trot line) with small nut, drop thru exhaust/intake ports with small piece of rag tied to end and pull thru ports.3)wipe bores with white cloth and if any hint of grey repeat washing. 4) rinse with heavy stream of water and wipe/ blow dry and oil bores with sponge soaked in 2 stroke oil.Make sureyou clean out the oil passages.

What about the wee check valve in the block for the center bearing ??-----I use the carwash as well as boiling water to scrub bores.

Once washed, I blow them out with compressed air then let them air dry in the sun for a day. Or, lacking the sun, I'll set them over the heater grate in my laundry room. Then as racerone says, lightly oil the bores to prevent any rust forming until you're ready to assemble.

Thanks all. I got it pretty clean combining the above methods....BUT, gonna do it again...just for safety. It looks good, might as well give the block a paint job while its on bench.
