Man, 27, charged with drunken boating

By Maki Becker

An Orchard Park boater was in the Chautauqua County Jail this morning after he tried to ram his vessel into a sheriff's marine patrol boat on Chautauqua Lake Thursday night, sheriff's officials said.

At about 8:30 p.m., the sheriff's office received a complaint about a fishing boat doing "close circles around fishing boats" at an unsafe speed in the Bays of Dewittsville.

The sheriff's Marine Patorl Unit went onto the water to look for the suspect and his boat. About 9 p.m., the sheriff's boat spotted the boat and turned on its emergency lights, but the boat sped off, then turned around and headed toward the side of the patrol boat. The marine unit took evasive action to avoid a collision, officials said.

The suspect then turned off his navigation lights and sped off.

After a search of the area, sheriff's deputies located the boat and the boater, whom they learned had allegedly used night vision goggles to help him elude law enforcement, officials said.

Thomas J. Bakowski, 27, of Squire Drive, Orchard Park was charged with two counts of reckless operation of a vessel, no stern lights, no navigational lights, boating while intoxicated, refusal to submit to a chemical test, and two counts of second-degree reckless endangerment.

Nice. Gotta love it. It just chaps my *** when people act like this. It makes the rest of us that are being responsible have to deal with invasive and often over zealous patrol officers harrassing us. Whenever you have morons like this the Government steps in and says we need to up our patrols in this area and stop people for "safety checks" so they can make sure we arent drinking. UGH!!

If you choose to get drunk enough to act like this, PLEASE STAY HOME!!!

night vision goggles???

This guy watches too much TV. Probably washed out of the Special Forces/SEALS but thinks he knows everything. I have seen a lot of those types.

Tis the season;
Boater arrested at La Porte lake

By Stan Maddux

LA PORTE ? James Russell had a fishing pole ripped out of his hands on Stone Lake when his line got caught in the prop of a boat traveling close to him.

Russell, 60, said he called police, who came down and arrested the other boater, Michael Streeter, 51, La Porte.

At about 7 p.m. Tuesday, Russell said he and two friends were fishing in a boat outside the channel that connects Pine and Stone lakes. Russell said they were yelling at Streeter to get back and started reeling in their lines.

?We kept telling them to stay back,? Russell said, ?and they just kept cussing at us.?

Streeter was about 20 feet from the men when the prop on the motor grabbed Russell?s line and yanked his rod and reel into the water.

Officers were called and found Streeter at the Stone Lake boat launch arguing with his wife, police said. Streeter allegedly began yelling at the officers, who detected an odor of alcohol on his breath. They arrested him on charges of public intoxication and disorderly conduct.

Russell said his pole sank to the bottom in about 30 feet of water, so he has no hope of getting it back.

Several days ago, Russell said while fishing he was driven off Pine Lake by disruption from passing personal watercraft and speed boats.

Gene Davis, Indiana Department of Natural Resources conservation officer, said there are no laws requiring boats to keep a certain distance away from other watercraft.

However, if a boater?s actions result in property damage or an accident, Davis said the operator is responsible for damages.

He also said conservation officers can use their own judgment in deciding if a boater is operating safely and issue citations.

?They need to use good common sense and be courteous of other people,? Davis said.
