hi all, i just got a 2003 wellcraft w/ a 250 yamaha. when motor is on water is barely dribbling out and there is some sand in it. is there a way to unclog it or do i need to take off lower end and replace the water pump? is it easy to do? ive been reading some other posts on the subject, but not quite sure since this is my first boat. is it as simple as take it off, maybe get a new seal and replace line or pump and pop it back on? fill with lube and all is well? thanks in advance.:D

Pull out the black plastic end from the lower metal section, pull it away from the rubber tube, and then insert some sort of tiny metal pin into the hole and remove the grit that is blocking it.

My C85 Yamaha did this last week. I run the thing most days, but suddenly when I left the dock behind my house, it wasn't "peeing".

[Normally, I'd prescribe a beer for that problem....]

:p

I pulled back into the dock, tied up, and did exactly what I told you. My C85 is a 1996 motor, and it has seen significant amounts of salt water and it is OLD. It's cruded-up, but it has a decent flow from the tell-tale normally. This particular time, when I did what I described...a couple bits of coarse sand came out, and suddenly it was squirting all over the place. The plastic end was plugged up. Try that first.

You can also use some 60 - 80 # monofilament. It is a little more flexible and can chase up in there. Try this with the motor running t prevent packing the sand in even harder! Good luck! :)

ok, i went out and took the plastic thing and it was clogged and the hose was to. blew out plastic piece and turned motor on with water hooked up tp it. it was a dribble, so i sucked out the sand , and noticed that it wasnt pushing at all. i could blow thru it easily and pull from it also effortlessly. so im guessing i need a new pump. is it easy to replace? is anything gonna just fall out when i take it apart? the lower end that is.

Water pumps are pretty easy. You didn't say what motor..2 or 4 stroke. If you plan on doing this you need a manual. That will help with all the other normal maintenance you will need to do. Here's a link to a site where a guy is posting a lot of upkeep and maintenance pics....good luck!
