I use the Pettit Hydro coat (which I had great results here in Boston waters last season.) Anyway the transducer growth when pulling it for the season was outrageous even with a few semi successful cleanings throughout the season.

The Transducer paints are water based...So is the Hydro coat. See where I'm going. Should be ok on the transducer?

You just don't want anything on the bottom of the transducer, it'll throw it off.

I looked at the MSDS of both products. The bottom paint has petroleum solvents in the formulation. the transducer paint does not. Solvents are not a big deal if you have a metal transducer. I?d not be so sure about a plastic transducer.

0.005? of paint going to throw it off how far?

Hey dingbat (that comes off funny :) Thanks for looking at those and pointing out those details. I would not have come to any of that by reading it myself.

Also I will paint the bottom as I'd rather have the paper thin coating of paint then the eco system that I had growing on it before..that was messing up the readings for sure. Thanks guys ! It was worth a shot.

I've used the special (expensive) transducer bottom paint on mine. It washes right off, no matter how careful you are prepping and how long you let it dry.

Big barnacles themselves, as well as the bubble trail, set your readings off much more than paint could, although I wonder about the metal content of regular bottom paint. Then again, a through-hull transducer is looking through bottom paint, too.

I don't see any reason not to paint the parts of the transducer other than the bottom with regular paint. The bottom, though, is a different plastic I would worry about affecting.

Also, the special (expensive) metals bottom paint, like for trim tabs, washes off, too.

You could also get a shoot through hull transducer. Very easy to install and if your hull is solid(no air pockets) they work very well.

I just bought a small bottle of transducer anti-fouling paint . . . not sure why it is different than the regular hull paint (I also use water based stuff), but it was only about $10, so WTH.

I figured it must have something to do with the metal compatibility or something . . . like H C says . . . it will probably wash off pretty quick and then I may have to ask the barnacles how deep the water is :noidea:

disappointing to hear it washed off so easily.. I too bought some $10 stuff so well see. Guess I will also just scrub off the transducer earlier and more frequently.

Remember guys sonar is sound waves and sound travels more easily through solid objects. If the paint dries hard and no thicker than it is, probably wouldn't be noticed. If you are concerned, paint a piece of plastic wrap. Take a reading with the boat in calm water without it, cover it with the wrap, and read it again.

I have always painted the transducer with whatever I was using for bottom paint, didnt seem to affect the sounder and kept the growth off. I now run a shoot thru much less problem and no holes in the transom.
