water blasting out of exhaust ???

Recently noticed a large amount of water spraying out of the exhaust of my engine ( 1995 "225" carborated Mercury). When I trim the motor up to just a little before you can hear cavitaion, the water stops shooting out. She's pumping water fine, and the engine temp is fine. Lower the motor a little bit and the water starts shooting again, along with some smoke or steam. Proformance has not been affected so far. Althought I just noticed it. Don't know if it just started then or if it has been happening. Any ideas folks????

Re: water blasting out of exhaust ???

I know that some water out of exhaust is normal, but this is excessive. I have had several outboards in my life, and never saw this happening. There is a major spray of water coming out of the exhaust. Almost like a garden hose. It never did this before. I just noticed it, but it could have been doing it for a few days now. I run just about every day. I guess it could be normal, but it just seems very excessive. Any more ideas?

Sea Hawk - Just think about it fot a minute. With the water pump pumping a healthy amount of water through the block where else would the water go except out through the prop? If you run the motor on muffs on a trailer you would see spray and flow of water out the hub like from a warer hose. What goes in must come out.

... and when water stops coming out due to engine being trimmed up so high, it is because it is no longer going in. Trim it down a little so the motor is taking in water again.

There are 2 exhausts on most motors...one is through the hub of the prop and the other is below the cowle on the back of the motor.

Sometimes the bolts with vibrate loose on the motor causing water to leak out and into the tray of the motor....Check all your bolts...get some locktite...have a nice day

PCG

Re: water blasting out of exhaust ???

OK, Let me clarify a little. The water shooting out is shooting out of the top exhaust port. (just under the cowle, dead center of motor, next to pisser) When I trim up a bit, water stops spewing out and it runs normal. When trimmed down, all **** breaks loose. The water shoots straight out teh back so it's not a matter of loose nuts. Also, I'm not trimming the motor up too much. I am well within the trims functional range. It stops just a hair passed the sweet spot where RPM, hull angle, and steering ease are at there best. Just a tiny hair. Like two 1/2 second taps up on the trim control button. again, the amount of waster is excessive. Not just a mist or a sputter.

Seahawk, OK,How far is the water shooting out the back? Are we talkin inches?feet?or yards?
Water is supposed to come out of those exhaust holes below the cowl.It is excess water coming from the water pump.It helps to cool the outboard "leg" and exhaust between powerhead and lower unit.It is most noticeable at higher speeds or rpm's(at idle). Most outboard owners don't see this while underway for obvious reasons. The faster you go or the higher the idle, the more water. You must have a good water pump there... :)
If you still think there is a problem, you (or someone else)can drop the lower unit to make sure the water pump tube is in correctly.(although this is unlikely, otherwise you would be overheating). :)

Seahawk, The reason the water discharge through exhaust relief ports decreases when motor is trimmed up is because you are allieviating back pressure and more water is exiting through hub .If you run motor on hose and place palms over water discharge ports on lower unit you will also see water begin exiting exhaust relief holes. If it is now doing it more than you have ever noticed one of these causes is all that I can imagine would cause this.#1,thermostat has been removed,#2waterpump has recently been replaced,#3, obstruction in water discharge porting at lower unit,#4,motor has been lowered on transom,#5, you simply didn't notice it before.

Re: water blasting out of exhaust ???

Thank you for your input fellas. Since I haven't noticed any change in preformance I'm gonna have to chalk this one up to being one of those weird things that just ARE. I will however check the lower unit over pretty good before I venture out again. Also, when I pull her out of the water for the winter I will drop the lower unit and give it a good once over. I really appriciate your patience, REAL APPEAL, convincing me that it was OK. I just refused to accept that it was normal at first. And thanks for the tips OB. Safe and happy days at sea to both of you. :D
