I have a 1957 Seaking 12 hp (GG8971B) and I'm kind of curious what the water bypass cover's function is. I checked the service manual and it doesn't mention it. Any information is appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Water bypass cover?

Are you speaking of the long strip of metal on the side of the gearcase? The water inlet screen is on the forward edge of the exhaust outlet snout, and a water passage is cast into the gearcase between there and the water pump. The bypass cover covers it, making a closed tube, so to speak, to the pump.

When running in reverse gear, the propeller sucks water away from the inlet screen, so holes in the bypass cover give it an alternate water inlet for when it is running in reverse.

If that is not what you mean by bypass cover, please explain.

That's exactly the piece. Thanks for the info.

I guess my next question is what would happen if it's missing? I just recently got this motor and I'm starting to refurbush it, but the water bypass cover is missing. Again, any info is much appreciated.

It must be in place or it will starve for water and overheat at anything over fast idle.

Place a free wanted ad on the www.aomci.org "Webvertize" classified ads forum for cheap. Or maye somebody here will have one before you get that far.

F_R,

Thanks for the help. I went on ebay and got a cover for $1.36! What a deal!
