I am having trouble getting water to circulate thru my 1955 big twin electric. I've checked the impeller and it looks in good shape. I started it for a few seconds and no water.blew air thru the pick up tube didn't seem plugged up. Used muffs and tryed it submerging it. The motor doesn't need to be in gear for the water to flow right?? Any help would be great.

Correct. Should pump in neutral just fine. Waterpump itself needs to be submerged to get it going as it is not self-priming, so the water level in your barrel, etc. needs to be a few inches above the bulge between the gear case and the exhaust housing.

So your talkin above the bolt that is above the water..but if it's not self priming wouldn't the muffs work?

Put the boat in the lake.-----Water must be 6" or more ABOVE the pump to work properly.

You're not pumping water for whatever reasons -- need to see a heavy spray out of the exhaust port on the back of the leg. If the impeller is turning with the shaft (it might not be), maybe the water tube missed the grommet in reassembly.

You checked the impeller... was it keyed to the driveshaft? looking at the picture, you only need to be about 4 inches deeper in the water. Muffs on that engine isn't a very good Idea, as they are designed to be used with water inlets in different locations than your engine has.

Not deep enough. As noted above, gotta be above that bulge. Muffs don't work well, if at all on these motors as there are two inlets. If you're only feeding one, it'll suck air from the other.
