Water Circulation

I purchased a 1990 SportCraft last season with a Volvo AQ131D. I had the shop winterize it for me but now I have a couple of questions as I take it out the first time this year.

I placed a flusher on the intake and let the water run about 5 min. I was not getting anything coming out. (other than the hole right under the intakes). So I filled the system at the filter on top of the engine. I was then able to get the engine turned on (with the flusher placed back on the intake) but the water flow out the exhaust stopped after a minute or two so I turned off the engine. The shop told me they replaced the impeller when the winterized it. I don't want to burn anything up but also want to make sure everything works before driving the 2 hours to the nearest lake.

How much water should I see coming out?

What should I be doing to make sure I get proper water circulation and once I do get it right what engine temp should I expect as a safe range?

Thanks,

Re: Water Circulation

It can take a few for the water to circulate thru to the exhaust. When you hook up the muffs without the engine running you will not get water all of the way into the engine. You need to attach the muffs and start up the motor. Keep an eye on the temperature and if you notice it climbing well above where it normally runs, then shut it down. If you have a good impeller then you should get water to the important parts and not hurt anything. Make sure the drive is lowered as far as you can without hitting the driveway. Whenever the motor is running on muffs never run the RPM's past 1500-2000 as you will damage the motor.

If your engine is not running, you won't get any water coming out the drive because the water won't pass by the impeller.

With the engine running monitor the engine temperature and feel the riser or use a handheld temp guage on the riser to make sure it is not getting too hot.

Thanks, seems like i should have known that. Duh!:D
How much water flow should I be getting once everything starts moving? The last motor I owned was an outboard and had a steady stream coming out. This seems to sputter at best.

IO's don't have telltales but you will see water coming out mostly from the exhaust reliefs on the transom shield and then some out exhaust above the prop.
