Hello Everyone,

Just did a mayor tune up and card rebuild on my capi and I got to tell u WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!! Gained at least 5-8km/h more averaging a top speed of 51mph. Know i look at the ignition key and beast will start like if it was EFI, cool weather...no problem 100% satisfied. :D:D

But with all good things there is always something else, Murphy's Law. I've been noticing water coming into the boat to my engine compartment through the transom or some ware in the stern drive. Anyone had this problem.

Also on low RPM I feel a strong vibration on the boat that goes away gradually as I accelerate the boat.:(

Any ideas would be much apreciated....thanks

What kind of motor, sterndrive? outboard? if its a sterndrive, first place I would look, is the rubber bellows

Mercruiser V6 4.3L I/O. I looked at them and they seem fine no tears or cuts on the rubber.

Yes Im in the same boat.

Ive had major work done to fix this but as you say Murphys law....

I had a water leak due to a bad transom seal. It needed to have the motor pulled and fixed. Then round 2, it wasnt corrected right the 1st time. So it was done again......Then, now the Y pipe is leaking because it wasnt properly tightened the 2nd time....I do have a good machanic but hes been stressed out a little LOL....I trust him to fix this, 3rd time is the charm right?

OK I would then take this info and address your probelms as, 1 transom seal 2 Y pipe 3 drain plug.

If you can look down in the bildge area when its dry right b4 you launch the boat, while its at the dock you may be able to see if the bildge drain plug is leaking. Mine was and its easy to fix. Pull the fitting, clean off the old sealer, re sylicone and re install. My screws were not the right screws so I used longer ones and its fine now.

The Y pipe, is where both manifolds connect together and exit. There is a joint and gasket that could have gone bad and would be obviouse if you can get your head back in there and see...maby put your hand below the pipe if you can and feel for water....The pipe is always cold there. Do this with the motor OFF for your safety!

Transom seal, well a lot of times you can not see it leaking but when all else is known not to be the cause it may be the damn transom seal. Your motor would be a lot easier to pull then mine and may actually be the 12 hour job the book says that it takes to do a transom seal.

Strong vibration could be the GYMBAL BEARING. Mine was replaced right after I knoticed a low Hz sound / vibration. It wouldnt be so bad at higher RPM but I kew it wasnt normal. My gymbal bearing apparently was NOT spinning or at best would at higher RPMs.....
Youll need to pull the drive.....It sounds like you got a bad gymbal bellows thats allowing water in and rusted the hell out of your bearing!

PS My bellows "looked" fine to but was leaking somewhere so it was replaced. Looks can be deceiving...Its like a 30.00 part and the bearing is like 85.00. Id spend the 30 bucks to ensure my new gymbal bearing wont die again to quick!
Hope that helps locate your problem.

Same thing here with my 90 Capri, Merc 3.0l and Alpha 1. I seem to take on water, not much, but more with a heavy load on board. If there is only 2 or 3 of us on board can go a whole day without the bildge pump kicking in, with 5 or 6 people then it will kick in a few times.

I was having some knocking on high speed turns, so decided to do the u-joints. Once I opened up the bellows area, found water in there, perhaps that is where it is coming from. The bellows looked fine, but I did find a small cut in them, not sure if I did it on removal. Anyhow same story as above, the gimble bearing was shot, doubt it was turning.

Just waiting on some part now, should have it back in the water by Easter. I would pull the stearn drive first and see what is going on in there.
