My 1980 35hp Johnson outboard filled the engine compartment up with water. Water was actually coming out aroud the motor cover seal. I pulled the spark plugs and the cylinders were full of water. Any ideas on the root cause?

You first need to get all the water out and get some oil in there to stop any corrosion. Badly blown head gasket ?? cracked block ?? How did you find this out ??? was it running fine and then just died on you ??
As much info on what happened and a little history of the motor would help.

It was running fine when this happened. Just prior to this trip the starter had been hanging up and I took off the air inlet cover (in front of the carb) and was going to remove the starter, but then put it back on planning to fix the starter later. I did pull the spark plugs and turned it over a ton of times and sprayed WD40 into both cylinders.

I noticed it when water starter coming out around the motor cover seal, the engine was still running at this time. The engine then died right after I saw the water leaking. I did not try to start it after that, jsut pulled the plugs, etc.

Get some oil in there as well.

I just noticed that the vent tube from the powerhead to the lower cowl is not connnected - would this cause me any problems?

Cracked block, tragically warped cylinder head, or fubar'd exhaust cover.

Are we talking about the water pump indicator line (AKA the pisser).
If so, there is the problem. If it is not connected to the lower cowl fitting, it is pissing water into the cowl.

I guess it's what folks are calling the pisser hole- the line connects to a grommet on the starboard side of the moter and connects to the port side of the engine - it's about thesize of a vacuum line on a car...
I did put some engine oil in both cylinders today and it drained out, down the shank... I also pulled the head and couldn't see any damage or water paths that didn't belong.

Here is what I suspect happened - the pisser tube fitting broke, filled the engine compartment with water high enough for it to get sucked into the carb and then dumped into both cylinders. The cylinders were not full of water, I would guess about 1/4 cup in each. Does this make sense?

Re: Water coming out of my motor cover...

I replaced the head gasked, fixed the pisser tube and it started right up and ran like a champ. The water out the pisser tube was kind of intermittent, so I plan to replace the impeller.

Thanks a million to all of the advice and help provided!!! :D
