I have a 60hp mercury 3 cyl.,serial 6549619, 1984. I started it up on the muffs, good water flow, but water is coming out of the top spark plug thread. Plug is in finger tight plus a bit more for tightness. Water is forcing its way between the spark plug threads and the motor housing. Only on the top plug. It has been sitting all winter. What could cause this? Head gasket go bad while sitting or something more complicated. Thanks

Are you sure its just not leaking from a water jacket cover?which is common....if you have one.

No. It is coming out between the spark plud threads and the housing the plug screws into.

If you have water in the cylinder do not try to start the motor. You will hydrolock the motor doing serious damage.

i'm gonna say that the water is leaking from the water jacket cover and being sucked in and pushed out with compression - spark plugs dont seal perfectly and steam could get drawn in there - it is common for these motors to leak around the top plug . of course you could have a cracked cylinder but lets be positive . if your up to it - carefully remove the bolts in fact spray them good with penetrating oil a day ahead - even so i snapped 4 and had to drill them out on my 88 classic fifty - so be prepared for that -and a larger repair bill should you go to a shop . best to drill them out in a drill press and if you dont have one you can find them cheap .in the end the threads were shot in most of mine so i drilled and tapped 1 size bigger . other than that it's a piece of cake

When I take off the head, what am I looking for? Should I put water to it on the muffs without starting it and see what happens? Do I look for cracks or holes? Is it normal for water jackets to leak? Or are the muffs forcing water where you don't want it to go? Any ideas would be helpful!

water jackets eventually leak - the gaskets shrink up just like any and or the jacket cover itself can become warped - just replace the gasket button her up and check for leaks - dont over-do it but you might need to go tighter than spec torque if there is a slight warp or in the case of a bad warp you will need to find another cover .
