I have the ear muffs on the lower unit. The engine is off. I ran the water through the lower unit while the engine is off. I noticed that the water was coming out of the exhaust of the lower unit. The water is not coming up through the water pump. I can't remember if this is correct from the last time i used the ear muffs on the lower unit while the engine was off. The pump impeller was changed and the old one looked perfect. Is it ok to run the engine or do we need to find if there is a leak somewhere?

Did you have the drive halves separated?

No, the only thing we changed was bellows, water hose between lower unit and transom, water pump impeller, changed the oil in lower unit and no water in the oil.

Try starting it and see if it works.
It's really hard to tell if you have a problem or not without actually seeing what you are seeing.
Maybe a picture showing where the water is coming out.

The first picture is the water running through the flush kit on the engine with the ear muffs on. the second pic is the same except with the ear muffs off. The water was not going through the engine because the water pump would not let it go.

I thought you had water on the muffs, not on the engine flush hose.
Your impeller is probably old and due for replacement, and water is being pushed past it, that's why you get water out the exhaust.

we did have the water going through the muffs earlier. Sorry for the confusion. We'll check the impeller. Thanks for the replies and I will keep you informed of the progress.

The impeller was changed yesterday, also the impeller is on the engine. When pushing through the muffs the water is not coming to the water pump, even with the water hose off.

We took the lower halve of the lower unit off. Upon inspection we observed the grommet had popped out of its placing. the grommet was crooked on the water tube. We took the grommet off and observed it was cracked on both sides. This caused the water to come out of the exhaust when we had the muffs on. Also when we had the water running through the water flush on the engine. I posted three pictures of the grommet and how wore out it was.

This fixed the problem with the water coming out of the exhaust when we had the muffs on the lower unit.

Glad if fixed your problem. That grommet is why I asked if you separated the drive. They get missed, and pushed sideways sometimes when putting them back together. First one I have seen with a cracked one.
