Water condensing on carbs of 60 hp Merc

New to the site, and thought I would ask a question that I would have liked to ask last summer. My carbs on my 1995 Merc 60hp (actually a 45hp jet drive, but 60hp powerhead)sweet a good deal of water. So much in fact that the the water will get into the throats and cause the milky color inside them. A mechanic told me that condensation is normal, but it causes it to run badly and doesn't appear normal to me. After running for about 5 minutes the carbs will be completly covered in water. It also dies on me sometimes like it is running out of fuel. When I check the bulb it is very hard, like it is pressurized with air. To make it stop I have to remove the fuel line at the motor and releive the pressure in the hose. I don't know if the two problems are connected or not, but figured I would give as much info as I could. Also had a problem with the motor running lean in the past, but I believe that has been fixed.

Sorry for the long post and thanks for any advice. :)

Hi Kris C

Some water on Carbs is normal in cold weather, as the cold from the fuel vapouring inside will make water from air condence on carb bodies. However it will never reach an amount that will interfear with the motor. In fact I´ve been told some race car engines have water injected to cool, but dont know if its true. If I were you, I would try to run the motor with hood off and see if your cooling system have a leaking gasket somewhere that sprayes on carb bodies. Be aware its maybee only visible at higher rpm where water pressure is high. Concerning pressure in primer bulb - I would check the fuel pump diaphrame for airleaks ( probably not possible if you have oil mixer ) or replace the primer bulb and both check valves as this could be reason for building up pressure in stead of pumping fuel by pulses. In other terms I think you have two problems.

Pardon my ignorance, but are the check valves located in the primer bulb or the fittings.

Thanks
