Water cooled rectifier question

Got a 2000 j130 vxsss and have a question about rectifier output. My tach seems to register low when below 1000 rpm. Registering 500RPM and sometimes less, in gear, sometimes zero. Tach is not bouncing around and seems to be correct in upper end as RPM at wot are same as they were before this popped up. Used a volt ohm meter to check wires coming out of regulator while idling on muffs. Red wire 12.9 volts , , Purple 13v, Yellow red 9.2v, yellow 5.0v and decreases to 2.5v at 2500 rpm, orange black from stator 5.5v, orange from stator 8v, grey at terminal strip 3.8v and does not change with RPM. Did not measure with a peak reading dvom, do I need one for these measuremants? I assess the charging system is working. I had read that the grey tach wire should read approximately 8V. Is that correct and do I need a peak reader to measure correctly? Trying to avoid throwing parts at tach problem and troubleshoot correctly. Any thoughts on rectifier based on measurements already taken...

Re: Water cooled rectifier question

You need a peak reader or dva to measure the gray wire voltage which should be 8 v. Also take your volt meter and put it across the battery when running WOT in the water and see what it says. Should be 13.8 - 14.2 volts if your VR is working.

Re: Water cooled rectifier question

Thanks for the reply. Will get a dva adapter for my meter and check tach wire. May not have boat out for a few weeks, but if rectifier fails the gray wire 8v test I will go ahead and replace. If it passes will confirm charge side out on the water. BTW been on several 4 to five hour trolling trips and have run chartlpotter, fish finder, cd player and vhf and battery shows no sign of weakening so I would guess charge side is working to some extent. Do I need to drain battery down before charging test to see if system will work to full output?

Re: Water cooled rectifier question

No. If you drain the battery down it will take longer to see what your peak voltage is.
