It has to be in your manual... But I'll guess 15-20 ft-lbs.... And they should be tightened in a a sequenced pattern...

Keithy B,

I just did mine. I tightened each bolt until the threads JUST stripped then backed off exactly half a turn, that should do it ;)

If you see me going past the Fylde coast, you should be able to recognise me by the jet of water flying out of the cowl :D

Duncan

On a Merc I would think the bolts are 1/4 x 20,and I would think about 7 to 8ft/lbs.

duncan, next time torque to just BEFORE you strip the threads,so your mechanic can have all the fun.

DHP

I dont like the sound of stripping threads, the reason for my question is to avoid this. Would it also be any advantage using any preperation on the threads to protect them from siezing in the future.

Cheers Keith B...

Antiseize will help the steel bolts torgue into the aluminum block without damage. Sometimes I like to snug them all, and then go and torgue them to the half value, and finally to the full value. On 1/4 inch fastners I would go 70 inch pounds, which isn't much.

fp

what is the bolt sizes? if the torque is not in the manual there is a standard torque value for each size. 60 inch pounds is 5 ft pounds. do NOT confuse the two valures or stripped threads and broken bolts will occur.
good luck and keep posting

I just redid mine - for real! 5/16" cover bolts torque to 240 in/lbs or 20 ft/lbs per the manual. Follow the proper sequence.
