just purchased used 1995 15hp Johnson runs great with earmuffs only ran a short time 3 min about no water from pee hole does this engine have a thermostat? should I have run in a tank?

Yes there should be a thermostat installed.-----The tell tale hose might be plugged.

would cold water bypass thermostat or would engine have to warm up first

You may find that water tfrom the tell tale does not even go through the motor block.

Cooling water does bypass t.stat at startup. When servicing stat, make sure the bypass hole isn't blocked. Test tank is better, with water level about half way up the shaft. (Leave the hose running.) Run a piece of weed whacker line up the pee hole, and see if it clears.
