I bought a NOS 1990 15hp mercury last year. I used it right out of the crate and put 17 hours on it.

From the first trip it did not pump water as good at the motor I had before. (1987 8hp merc) When I ran her for the first time this year she was not pumping water like she should.
I'm going to bring the motor in to have the water empeller replaced. Before I do so I'd like to get an idea of what it will run me. How much will this cost?

Thanks,
11

Re: water empeller

You are a luck man Ryan. 13 year old water pumps usually fry motors. That is what they are good at.

Forget taking it to a mechanic. Get a manual for you motor and do it yourself. I don't know your motor but I would think you could do it yourself for less than $30.00. I had an OMC mechanic quote me $250.00 to do the pump on my OMC V4. He never saw my money.

I agree with SoLittle on the do it yourself idea. If you've got a Manual and have read it first, it will cost you about $30.00 and a few hours of your time at most. No special tools are needed and those little motors are easy to do. Also, many manuals recommend that you change the impeller annually(Overkill in fresh water),so even if you don't do any other major repairs to your motor, this is one that you should learn how to do.

I don't trust myself with doing the jod. I know little about outboard motors. The water pump is only a few years younger then I am.

The man I bought the motor will do it for my for $30.00 dollers in labor, this is good because he'll teach my how to do it.

This my freinds is what I call a great seller.

11
