Water filling up in bottum of engine compartment '82 Evinrude 70 HP

Recently revived this old Evinrude and when she finally started the other day (had the muffs on) and it ran for about a minute water started filling up in the bottum of the engine compartment. It was "pissing" fine and the engine seen to run just as good as I can remember. Immediately shut engine off and water goes away...
I took the lower unit off yesterday and it was full of mud dobbers and other things...
I ordered an impeller since I have the lower unit off anyway. So will have to wait till it arrives to put the lower unit back on.
Is there anything else that I should look at to fix this????
I hope I don't have a gasket blown somewhere....

Take a look up inside the exhaust housing with a strong flashlight. The upper grommet on the copper tubing may be bad. There is a seal under the powerhead, but hopefully you won't need to address that. It would involve the removal of the powerhead to replace it.

Yes you likely have a leaky gasket on the cooling passage. Check the bolts for tightness. maybe it will just tighten up.

Hook up compressed air and blow through the pick up tube. Hook up a garden hose to the pick up tube and turn it on and see if you can see where it is leaking from

When you say the "copper tubing" is that in reference to the tubing for the cooling water?
Is there any way to fix without taking off the powerhead...

Yes, at the top of the copper tubing. I doubt that the grommet can be replaced without taking of the powerhead, but maybe it can be. Even if it does need to come off, it's not to bad of a job.

Take the cowling off and inspect the water lines going from the thermostat to the heads (lower, rear of engine). Two hoses, with bends, about 3" long. Also inspect the hose that goes from the engine to where it pees.

If you see no visual leaking gaskets , hoses under the cawling, move to taking the lower unit off and look at the gromit under the powerhead. If the gromit is broken , melted ,or anything else you have to pull the ph and replace. It really isn't a huge task on these engines, but just make sure that you have the gaskets you need to go back together with it, and if you are pulling the LU you might as well inspect your water pump, but that's just me.

I will look at the grommet this weekend since boat is at brother's house..Seems like I have alot of things to check...

Ok I had my brother check with a flashlight yesterday and said it "looked" ok but I want to see for myself...
What holds the copper tube that runs from the water pump up to the powerhead...is it only the grommet at the top and bottum....
