Water flow from exaust ports on 99 40hp yam

I am looking to buy a used 1999 Yamaha 40 model #C40TLRX.
While test running I did not see any water flowing out of the exhaust ports on the back of the motor like my Johnson always had. When I ask a mechanic at the local shop he said it should have water flow out of the ports after the thermostat opens, a little at idle and a lot at WOT. Is this true? Maybe he was talking of some of the newer models.
The Johnsons and Evenrudes I have had in the past had water coming out all the time and I looked at a friends 2001 Yamaha 60 hp yesterday as we road for about 45 minutes and it had a small amount (spray) coming out from the very beginning and anytime it idled but nothing at WOT even after idling around for a while and then running opened up for 15 minutes or more.Water temp is in the 80's and air temp around 90 F here on the Texas central coast.
So, can someone tell me if there should be water flow out of the exhaust ports, how much, and when? Or at least what their Yamaha do.
And if this is a problem what could cause it? There was plenty of water coming out of the tell tail on both the 40 and 60 and no temperature alarms or over heating that I could tell

I disassembled a 86 yam 30 hp that someone discarded because they had broke off 5 of the 10 head bolts and I found the anode inside the block was corroded up so bad that it blocked off some of the passages. Could this be one of the problems?

Can anyone tell me if the thermostat has to open before water will flow through the idle exhaust ports and how much is normal on a c40tlrx?

Those are idle relief ports and the amount of discharge veries greatly from builder to builder and even model to model within the same builder. The big question here is are you getting hot? With the engine warmed up you will usually get a spitting little mist from those ports at idle and that may increase when throttled up quickly then backed off on the water and will act differently on the flusher.

That is what I have always seen on my 35 Johnson, but this 40 Yamaha is not putting out anything from the idle relief ports. It is a very clean boat, motor, and trailer with low run time, as I was told by the owner for the past 2 years, and it did not run hot, I ran it for around 30-40 minutes fast and slow. Still no mist or anything, the tell tail puts out plenty of water. the current owner said he has never noticed any output from there since he owned it or replaced the thermostat, but he said did not run it much at all.
I was concerned, but I believe I will buy it and replace the thermostat and impeller myself.
I have seen mention in the forums about some tricks to changing the impeller on Yamaha's, but I cannot seem to find the threads that give them.

Can someone lead me in the right direction?
Thanks in advance

Bought the boat. Changed the water pump and thermostat. Even went through the carbs. Runs good and even idles good now. Still no water coming from the idle relief exhaust ports at any time. Telltale flowing good. No signs of overheating.
Is there any thing else I need to be looking at as to why there is no water flow from the idle exhaust ports?
Looked at the local yam shop but did not have the repair manual. Will have to order on line.
Also need to try to understand how the start enrichment system works. Should something happen when you push the key in? I do not hear anything. I expected to hear a click or something like a solenoid energizing but hear nothing

I just purchased a 2008 Yamaha F40TLR that has a great stream of water from the pilot tube but nothing from the exhaust port where we all expect to see it when thermostat opens. Mech told me this "may" be normal. No overheating problems so far which is a good thing since it has been in the shop more than in the water for other problems. I was also told that there is no electric choke on the key, that it uses something called an 'enrichment system'....still wish I had a choke!!!
