I just had my lower drive rebuilt and I installed the two halves, went to put water in it for the first time. I hooked up my muffs and turned on the water, but did not start the engine, shouldn't i have gotten water flow up through the engine? I have the water hose to the manifold disconnected and the block drain is still open and I didn't get any water. The drive was all the way down. I did crank the engine briefly and didn't see or hear any water in the engine. Any ideas?

If you DO have water flow to the engine, there's a problem. If everything is correct the vanes of the water pump will stop any water reaching the engine UNTIL they are turning....

Thanks achris, I was hoping that was the answer. I'm going to install my new points tomorrow and try and get her started.

It's definitely on my list of upgrades. I've had this boat for 3 years and have never had it in the water, it is a fixer. It ran when I got it but the drive was shot, now it won't run and I suspect the points. Once I get it running I still have another problem, I'm getting water in the oil. I am convinced that it is the manifold, if it ends up being the block I will scrap this boat and look for something already ready to hit the water.

Odd you talk about water in the oil. Exactly what oil are you talking about? I thought you bought a another drive section for the broken one you initially had. Was it used or rebuilt? If rebuilt, then somebody didn't rebuild it properly. New seals should have been installed to stop water intrusion in the foot oil. If that is the oil you are talking about. Post the pictures and let us know what oil has water in it!

If it's coming in through the manifold or block he's referring to engine oil, not gear oil in the drive.... ;)

You normally will not get water going through the drive unless the engine is turning. The impeller will stop the water if it is in good condition.
