We have an old 1973 Johnson 65 HP outboard ... (65ESL73R)

We changed the impellor but we noticed that water was coming out of the water pipe that goes up from the water pump to the engine. We took this pipe off and noticed that there was a small hole that was drilled into the pipe. Why do they have this ? Is there supposed to be water in the middle section ? Also the water that came out of the engine went directly into the middle section ? There are 2 holes in the casing where I though the water was supposed to go out but there's nothing connecting these holes to the motor where the water comes out ?

I'm lost on how this works ???

csaba,

Sounds about right.

The mid section of your engine is sometimes called the "exhaust tower". The exhaust on outboards is water cooled-thus the engine cooling water is dumped into the exhaust tower.

The two "vents" you see at the top of the exhaust tower are sometimes called "exhaust reliefs". These holes will typically emit a spray at idle speeds and a steady stream at planing speeds. They emit the steady stream at planing speeds because the exhaust tower is full of water.

csaba,

By the way, that pipe is MANDATORY. That is how the water gets from the pump to the engine.

Why the hole is in it, I do not know, possibly it is a purge.

Im about to purchase a 1973 Fabuglas 14' walk through w/ the 73 Evin Triumph 65hp. Along the same line as casaba, if the motor is in the tilt pos and locked, will the water have a tendency to come out the bottom of the L/U instead of the exhaust relief holes? we didnt have a tank to run it in, but used the flush cups for water, we only ran it for about 20-30 seconds, is this enough time for the exhaust tower to fill and start spueing water from exhaust relief?

sorry didnt realize this thread was 7 years old, Hope yall are still out there.

Also, why am i not seeing a water pump repair kit for this. only a impellar......
Thanks, Pete
