Water flow

I have a 1982 75hp Johnny that was recently rebuilt. I went inshore fishing in the marsh and on low tide found myself stuck on a mud flat. In order not to spend the night on the water I used the motor to get myself out. While doing so the tell tale was squirting grey water that then turned in grey mud and then stopped. Within 1 minute I was able to unstick my boat and hear my overheating buzzer scream. I then trimmed up and cleared the water intake all the while letting the motor cool. Once cool I ran it at full throttle to bring water pressure up to max to hopefully blow out all remaining crud. The motor never ran hot again. At home I put on the muffs to purge the salt water and noticed that there was no water discharging from the propeller (thru hub exhaust) although water was discharging from all other locations. Can this be harmful even though the motor is not overheating??? Any suggestions is appreciated. Thanks

Re: Water flow

Yep.

Plan on replacing, at a minimum, the impeller in the water pump. When you drop the lower unit hook up a hose to the water pick-up tube and take the thermostat cover off and back flush.

Worst cast is the crud getting caked in a water passage and restricting water flow - not good. That would call for pulling the head(s), exhaust cover etc.

Hi Donkdaddy
I was interested reading your post as I done exactly the same think with my boat & 77 v4 115
motor, stuck in the mud on out going tide, had to wait a few hours till it was on its way in again got floated used the tilted motor to get it unstuck, overheated and stopped then had to be rescued and towed back to port by volunteer marine rescue as couldnt get motor started again.
havent got the motor going again since then due to lack of funds but coming close to getting it up and running again soon. best of luck with future boating escapades :)
