Water/fuel separator arrangement

Last year I had a lot of problems with fouling of my carbs. So this year I installed a water/separator and an inline filter in the engine compartment. My question....is adding the inline filter overkill and cause more restriction on the suction side of the fuel pump? Should I remove the inline and just rely on the water/fuel separator filter?

Re: Water/fuel separator arrangement

I doubt the in-line filter is going to restrict flow. The fuel/water separator filters are very good at removing water, dirt, trash, whatever. I use the fuel/water separator and the under-cowl filter screen that came on the motor, with no fuel restriction problems. Use the Stabil all the time and drain your carbs a couple of times per year. That's what I do and my 1999 motor has never had carbs off, cleaned or adjusted. Runs great all the time! Good Luck!

If nothing else it's adding one more potential point of failure to the fuel delivery system because it's a cut/splice in the line. The fuel water separator/filter, mounted close to and lower than the fuel pump, ought to be just fine. If it makes you feel any better, I trust my attwood separator/filter just fine. But I'm just some guy on the internet :D

Thanks guys. I took it out this weekend and didn't seem to have a problem. But you never know. Thought I'd ask the board and get a consensus.

I would recommend you remove the inline. It is not helping with the fuel/water issue, and has the potential to restrict the fuel flow.

i was thinking of adding one to my 86 120HP outboard. where did you put/mount the separator?

Re: Water/fuel separator arrangement

I've been running an inline filter right before the fuel pump and a filter/seperator for years. Glad I did, had an instance where a chunk of fuel line after the filter /seperator found it's way into the inline filter and not the pump or a carb.
Have never had an issue with reduced fuel flow.

I have mine mounted to the transom just below the motor. Fuel line comes out of the hull, to the bulb, to the separator, to the fuel pump.

You want to have the bulb before the filter so that the only thing between the filter and the fuel pump is an unmolested brand new top quality fuel line. That gives you the best chance of filtering out bad things. My first setup came with the bulb after the filter and one day a chunk of rubber broke loose from either the fuel line or the primer bulb and lodged its self in one of my carbs and starved out one cylinder.
