water fuel separator/mariner 115hp

Good eveing all,

I have recently had a water/fuel sep fitted by a marine mechanic during an outboard service. The outboard is running fine and really motors well but always needs neutral revs to restart once I have been sitting out on the sea for a while even after a good run? is this just normal for a 6 cylinder outboard?it is also a little sluggish at trolling/idle speed.

I checked the filter and it was quite messy. It is the "spin on" 35-807172 type, is it safe to flush/rinse these filters through for re-use or am I better off just replacing? I have an underfloor tank and expected to have to change the filter pretty soon after install as god knows what was in my tank previously??!

I am also wary about the install of the filter, the mechanic appears to have connected up the fuel line to the filter against the flow of the arrows on the mounting bracket/inlets & outlets? should the fuel from my tank be deposited into the centre of the filter via the threaded inlet and the filtered fuel pulled up and into the outboard via the perimeter of the filter? or vica versa....(hope that makes sense)

Normally the inline sixes will restart w/o issue when they are warm. It therefore sounds like yours is not tuned properly.

The fuel line from the fuel tank should be attached to the fuel fitting on the seperator that points into the seperator. The fuel line to the motor should be attached o the fuel fitting that points out of the seperator. The seperator puts fuel in at the bottom, and draws it off the top of the seperator, thereby allowing the water to settle.

If you have large amounts of dirt in the tank, change the filter regularly. If it is just water in the tank, you can empty it out of the filter periodically.

Flow the arrows for hookup. As far as cleaning, if they are not dirty, you can empty them and reuse if the primary collatant was water. Otherwise, just replace regularly. They are not very expensive...

If it was hooked up backwards, you were pulling water into your engine.

thanks for your answers chris. I am located in New Zealand....we left the UK 3 and a half years ago. As I expected the mechanic has hooked up the filter the wrong way, I removed the filter this morning and cleaned it out, it had filtered a lot of water form my tank which I anticipated. I then topped up the filter with fresh fuel and replaced it. The engine is running much smoother now and is restarting without choke! I will reconnect the lines to suit the arrows!
